Salt & Straw is coming to Oakland. The Portland, Oregon, ice cream company opens its first Oakland shop in the Rockridge neighborhood on Friday, Nov. 13, KRON4 reported.
Where it is
The scoop shop is at 6310 College Ave., replacing Ike's Love & Sandwiches, which opened there in 2016, according to the Rockridge Voice. Ike's other Bay Area locations remain open.
It will be Salt & Straw's ninth Bay Area location and its second in the East Bay, joining San Ramon, KRON4 said. The company also has Bay Area shops in San Francisco, Palo Alto, Santa Clara and Santa Rosa.
About the company
Cousins Kim and Tyler Malek founded Salt & Straw in 2011. It started as a neighborhood ice cream cart and has grown to about 50 locations, the Rockridge Voice reported.
Another chain on College Avenue
The Rockridge Voice noted that the opening means another chain on College Avenue, a shopping street long known for independent shops and restaurants. The neighborhood newsletter asked whether national brands can fit in while keeping the local character that made the district successful.
