A preliminary magnitude 2.7 earthquake shook the Peninsula at 5:17 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 28, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, as reported by NBC Bay Area and KRON4.

Where it hit

NBC Bay Area reported that the USGS placed the quake 1.3 miles northeast of Pacifica, 3.2 miles west of San Bruno and 3.9 miles west-southwest of South San Francisco. KRON4 said the epicenter was in Pacifica, south of Skyline College, at a depth of about 6.5 kilometers, or roughly 4 miles.

A quake this size is usually felt only lightly near the epicenter, if at all. Neither outlet reported damage or injuries.

Part of a busy week

It was one of several small quakes in the region this week. NBC Bay Area also reported a preliminary 2.6 near San Jose on Oct. 27 and a 2.7 near Hollister on Oct. 29.

Be ready

Small quakes are a good reminder to check your emergency kit, secure heavy furniture and know how to drop, cover and hold on. The statewide Great California ShakeOut drill was held on Oct. 15.
