Drivers who use Niles Canyon Road to get between the Tri-Valley and Fremont will need another way through Sunol this weekend. Caltrans plans to fully close State Route 84 at the Arroyo de la Laguna Bridge from 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, until 10 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 11.

Why the road is closing

Crews are pouring concrete for the deck of a new bridge that will replace the current span, which dates to 1939. Caltrans says a full closure is needed to give workers a safe area while the concrete goes in. Replacement work started in May with the first stage on the north side of the bridge. When finished, the agency says, the new bridge will have a wider roadway and sidewalks that meet accessibility standards.

What stays open

Only the stretch of Highway 84 between Sunol Corners and Main Street is affected. Unlike the September closure for girder installation, no ramps or other sections of the highway will be shut. Main Street, Paloma Way and all freeway ramps and exits are expected to stay open throughout.

The detours

  • From Livermore toward Sunol: take northbound I-680 to the Sunol Boulevard exit, head west on Sunol Boulevard and Castlewood Drive, then south on Foothill Road.
  • From Livermore toward Fremont: take southbound I-680 and exit at Mission Boulevard (Highway 238).
  • From Sunol toward I-680: go east on Main Street, north on Kilkare Road and Foothill Road, east on Castlewood Drive, then north on Pleasanton-Sunol Road to the freeway.
  • From Pleasanton-Sunol Road toward Highway 84: go north on Pleasanton-Sunol Road, east on Koopman Road, onto northbound I-680, then follow the Sunol Boulevard, Castlewood Drive and Foothill Road route.

Several of those routes run over Pleasanton city streets, so expect more traffic there overnight. Caltrans says electronic message signs will guide drivers, and it advises allowing extra travel time through Sunol. The schedule depends on the weather.
