Multiple people were killed and others were injured in a shooting just after midnight Monday, Nov. 2, near Jetty Road in Moss Landing, the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office said. The office said there is “no active threat to the Moss Landing community at this time.”

Jetty Road branches off Highway 1 just north of the Elkhorn Slough bridge and runs between Moss Landing State Beach and the slough. Moss Landing is a small coastal community about halfway between Santa Cruz and Monterey.

What officials have said

The sheriff’s office confirmed “multiple fatalities and casualties” but did not say how many people were killed or hurt. It also did not say what led to the shooting, according to KTVU and NBC Bay Area.

North County Fire Protection District Chief Jess Cortez told KTVU that when his crews arrived, they found two people with gunshot wounds to the chest and one person with minor injuries. Both gunshot victims were pronounced dead at the scene, and the injured person was taken to a hospital. Fire crews cleared the scene at about 2:40 a.m., Cortez said.

Closures

California State Parks police closed Jetty Road and Moss Landing State Beach at the sheriff’s request while deputies investigate, Lookout Santa Cruz reported. No arrests or suspect information had been announced as of Monday morning.

This is a developing story, and details may change as officials release more information.
