North Beach has a new late-night anchor. Lillie Coit's is now open at 1707 Powell St., at Union Street on the west side of Washington Square. It is named for Lillie Hitchcock Coit, who as a girl ran with Knickerbocker Engine Co. No. 5 and left the city a third of her estate.
Hours
The restaurant is open from 4 p.m. to 2 a.m., seven nights a week. The kitchen serves until 1 a.m. and the bar's last call is 1:30 a.m. There are no reservations; it is walk-ins only.
What to order
The menu leans toward a brasserie-style raw bar: oysters, tinned fish, steak frites, French onion soup, a 32-ounce tomahawk steak and a house amaro. The Oyster Jubilee runs every night from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m.: buy six oysters and get six free.
A long road
The team got the keys to the space in 2017 and ran a preview called Petite Lil's, serving oysters and tinned fish, starting in February 2023. For the grand opening, the sign was lit at 7:33 p.m., a nod to Coit Tower's 1933 opening. The sign is made from the old bar top of the Washington Square Bar & Grill.
