Weeks after an elderly man was killed in a crosswalk near Lake Merritt, the driver police say fled the scene has turned himself in.
The arrest
Oakland police identified the driver Thursday as Abdullah Mohamed, 22. Officers arrested him after he surrendered, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. He had not been charged as of Friday afternoon. Police said the case has been sent to the Alameda County District Attorney's Office.
The crash
Eugene Lynch was struck just before 6 a.m. in early October in the marked crosswalk at Lakeside Drive and 17th Street, police said. The driver was going at high speed and left before officers arrived. Oakland Rapid Response, a street safety group, said Lynch tried to get out of the way of a white Nissan. It said he volunteered with the Alameda County Community Food Bank and cared for his sister and his son.
A street long flagged as dangerous
The group said the intersection had been redesigned with pedestrian and cyclist protections, but construction was postponed. It said Lakeside Drive's wide, straight lanes and lack of traffic calming encourage speeding. By the group's count, 19 people had been killed on Oakland streets this year when Lynch died, 13 of them walking or biking.
