Junipero Serra Park sits in the hills behind Millbrae and San Bruno. San Mateo County Parks says it offers views of San Bruno Mountain, San Francisco Airport, the bay and Mount Diablo. Wikipedia puts it at 103 acres, between Interstate 280 and El Camino Real.

A ridge mostly quarried away

The park is the remnant of a sandstone ridge, according to Wikipedia. Most of the ridge was removed for building materials by a quarry that ran until the mid-1950s. The county acquired the land in 1956. It was first called North County Park and was dedicated on May 22, 1960.

Long before that, the site was used by Native Americans, as shown by shell mounds found there, Wikipedia says. It later came under Mission Dolores and the Presidio, and in 1827 it became part of Rancho Buri Buri.

What's there

Wikipedia says the Serra Fault, an active branch of the San Andreas Fault, runs through the park, and El Zanjon Creek runs along its north and west sides. The car entrance is off Crystal Springs Road. There are picnic areas, two playgrounds and the De Anza and Live Oak Nature trails. The county points to oak foothill plants and spring wildflowers, and says it manages trees and brush to lower wildfire risk for nearby communities.
