San Francisco is partway through one of its biggest waterfront park projects. When it's done, India Basin in Bayview-Hunters Point will have a continuous 10-acre waterfront park. One half is open now. The other is fenced off for construction.
A boatyard's history
Small boat builders began working along the southern part of India Basin around 1870, drawn by cheap land and deep bay water, according to Wikipedia's history of the neighborhood. San Francisco Recreation and Park Department bought the 900 Innes Avenue property in 2014. Its cleanup, from March 2021 to August 2022, removed contaminated soil and sediment left by industrial boat building and vessel repair, along with marine debris and abandoned structures, the department says.
What's open: 900 Innes
The second phase, finished in October 2024, built out the 900 Innes park. It rehabilitated San Francisco Landmark No. 250, the Shipwright's Cottage. It also added a food pavilion, a makers shop and an operations building, along with an ADA-compliant walkway from Innes Avenue to the Bay Trail and native landscaping. The salvaged marine way rails were restored too.
What's closed: India Basin Shoreline Park
The third and final phase rebuilds India Basin Shoreline Park, a 7.5-acre site first built in the 1990s. Rec and Park said construction would start Sept. 23, 2025, and that the park would be closed and fenced through early 2028. Bay Trail access between the PG&E shoreline and 900 Innes is closed, so plan an alternate route. The plans include regrading steep slopes, a new gravel beach, a boathouse with a pier and dock for kayaking and fishing, a renovated playground, a new toddler playground and decks with a view of the Bay City ferry shipwreck.
The department's October 2026 update says cofferdam installation along the marine way is done, and dewatering and excavation are underway. Utility work is also continuing at the future boathouse.
Nearby, Heron's Head Park and Candlestick Point are both open.
