Hayward Unified elects trustees by area, so only voters who live in Areas 2 and 4 will see these races. Hayward voters citywide also pick a mayor and two council seats.

Trustee Area 2

  • Joann Guzman, 43, is listed as a community volunteer. She serves on the district's Bond Oversight Committee.
  • Joe Orlando Ramos is listed as an author and adult educator.

Trustee Area 4

  • Michelle Fernelius, 43, is a parent and research director. She has a master's degree in biostatistics from Cal State East Bay.
  • Maria Araceli Orozco is listed as a parent, caregiver and student. She has lived in Hayward for 32 years, sent four children through Tennyson High, and served two terms as president of the district's English Learner Advisory Committee (DELAC).

None of the four uses an incumbent designation on the ballot, so both seats will get new trustees.

How to vote

Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3. Polls and vote centers close at 8 p.m., and mailed ballots must be postmarked by Election Day and arrive within seven days. You can check your registration and ballot status at sos.ca.gov/elections. California lets you register and vote the same day at a vote center.
