U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents detained at least two people in Hayward around 7:15 a.m. Monday, Oct. 26, near A and Filbert streets, Patch reported, citing the Alameda County Immigration Legal and Education Partnership (ACILEP).
What witnesses described
According to ACILEP, about four officers took part, some in plain clothes with visible weapons, using three to four vehicles. Telemundo Área de la Bahía reported that the rapid-response network said five Guatemalan men were stopped in a pickup truck. Three were later released. The released men said agents told them they were looking for a Colombian man. Agents photographed everyone in the truck and took away two men who allegedly had records, Telemundo reported.
What officials said
Hayward Mayor Mark Salinas called the arrests "deeply troubling" and said there were "many unanswered questions," according to Patch. ICE did not respond to Patch's request for comment. The agency has said its officers use "the minimum amount of force necessary."
The bigger picture
Patch noted that ICE detained at least three people across the Bay Area last week, including one in Oakland, as President Trump calls for 3,000 immigration arrests a day nationwide.
If you need help
Alameda County residents can reach ACILEP's rapid-response network to report ICE activity or find legal help. Everyone in the U.S. has the right to remain silent and does not have to open their door to agents without a warrant signed by a judge.
