Thursday marks 12 years since the Giants won Game 7 of the 2014 World Series. They beat the Kansas City Royals 3-2 at Kauffman Stadium on Oct. 29, 2014, for their third championship in five years.
How it happened
- Veteran Tim Hudson started but didn't make it out of the second inning. The Royals scored twice to tie the game.
- Jeremy Affeldt kept the game tied through the fourth.
- In the top of the fourth, singles by Pablo Sandoval, Hunter Pence and Michael Morse gave the Giants a 3-2 lead.
- In the fifth, manager Bruce Bochy brought in Madison Bumgarner on two days' rest. Bumgarner had started and won Games 1 and 5.
Five scoreless innings
Bumgarner threw 68 pitches and retired 15 of the last 16 batters he faced, MLB.com recalls. With two outs in the ninth, Alex Gordon's single was misplayed into a trip to third base. Salvador Perez then popped out to Sandoval at third to end the game.
"I'm a little tired now," Bumgarner said afterward.
By the numbers
The 25-year-old Bumgarner posted a 0.43 ERA over 21 innings against the Royals. He was the first Giants pitcher to win World Series MVP. The Giants had also won titles in 2010 and 2012.
