A fatal chain-reaction crash involving as many as eight vehicles blocked southbound Interstate 880 at Mission Boulevard in Fremont early Sunday, NBC Bay Area reported, citing the California Highway Patrol incident log.

The first call came about 3:57 a.m. for a disabled vehicle on the right shoulder and on-ramp area. By 4:32 a.m., reports said multiple vehicles were still crashing, with an estimated seven to eight vehicles involved, including a white Ford Transit van. Callers said one vehicle struck the disabled car, spun onto the mainline and was hit again. Another vehicle ended up in an embankment south of State Route 262.

CHP requested three tow trucks for people reportedly trapped. The Alameda County coroner was notified about 5:37 a.m. A SigAlert at 5:58 a.m. said southbound lanes 2, 3 and 4 were blocked; authorities later sought a hard closure at Mission Boulevard.

Authorities had not publicly named the person who died as of Sunday evening reports. CHP is investigating. Patch and NBC said the collision expanded within an hour of the first report.
