Rookie Jack Jasinski headed home an 83rd-minute equalizer Wednesday night at PayPal Park, giving the San Jose Earthquakes a 2-2 draw with the Colorado Rapids. The point clinched the Quakes' first home playoff game since the stadium opened in 2015.
How the goals came
- 15th minute, San Jose: Reid Roberts headed in a Timo Werner corner kick for a 1-0 lead.
- 26th minute, Colorado: Morgan Whittaker took a pass from Wayne Frederick at the top of the box and scored past goalkeeper Angus Gunn.
- 73rd minute, Colorado: Two minutes after Werner was shown a red card, Darren Yapi scored off a feed from Georgi Minoungou to put the Rapids up 2-1.
- 83rd minute, San Jose: With both teams down to 10 men, Niko Tsakiris sent a corner to the far post and Jasinski headed it in through the narrowest of angles.
Two red cards
Referee Ramy Touchan sent off Werner, the Quakes' German designated player, in the 71st minute. Four minutes later, Touchan showed Colorado's Kosi Thompson a red card after Preston Judd was fouled on a breakaway, evening the numbers again.
San Jose outshot Colorado 17-11 and put eight shots on target to the Rapids' three, according to match statistics.
A familiar hero
It was the second straight late equalizer against Colorado for Jasinski, a rookie out of Princeton. He also scored in the 95th minute of a 1-1 draw in Colorado on Oct. 10. Tsakiris's assist was his team-leading 12th.
Where things stand
The Quakes are fifth in the Western Conference at 13-9-10 with 49 points. Colorado moved to seventh with 43 points. Head coach Bruce Arena clinched a playoff berth with San Jose on Oct. 17, making it the fifth MLS club he has taken to the postseason in his second season in charge.
