One person was killed and another injured Tuesday morning, Oct. 20, 2026, when two cars collided head-on on Dublin Boulevard in Dublin, sending both off the road and onto the shoulder of Interstate 580. Dublin Police Services is investigating.

Why it matters: The crash shut a busy stretch of Dublin Boulevard for more than three hours during the morning commute and blocked two westbound lanes of I-580, one of the Tri-Valley's main routes toward Oakland.

What happened

Police responded at about 8:54 a.m. to a head-on collision between a white Rivian SUV and a silver Hyundai Sonata on Dublin Boulevard between Silvergate Drive and Inspiration Drive, Dublin Police Services Capt. Miguel Campos told Patch. That section of Dublin Boulevard runs right alongside the freeway in western Dublin.

Both vehicles went off the roadway and tumbled onto the right shoulder of westbound I-580, police said. They did not hit any other cars, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Two people were taken to the hospital, and one of them died, police told the Chronicle. Police did not say whether the two were drivers or passengers.

Closures

The city sent an email alert at 9:37 a.m. telling drivers to avoid the area, the Pleasanton Weekly reported. Dublin Boulevard was closed in both directions between Silvergate and Inspiration drives from about 9 a.m. to 12:20 p.m. while officers investigated, according to Patch. The California Highway Patrol said two lanes of westbound I-580 were also blocked for several hours.

What we don't know yet

Police have not released the names of the people involved, the nature of the survivor's injuries, or what caused the collision. It is not yet known whether speed, impairment or a medical issue played a role.

Anyone who saw the crash or has dashcam video can contact Dublin Police Services.

A wet commute ahead

The crash came a day before the season's first widespread rain. Forecasters expect showers to spread across the Bay Area Wednesday afternoon and evening, making roads slick for the evening commute after months of dry weather, the San Francisco Chronicle's forecast said. Bands of steadier rain are expected in the evening, with totals near a quarter-inch possible in parts of the East Bay and about a tenth of an inch in much of Oakland and San Francisco. Tri-Valley drivers heading home on I-580 and Dublin Boulevard should expect slick pavement and lower visibility through Thursday morning, when scattered showers may linger.
