Looking for something to do with the kids that isn't trick-or-treating? Chabot Space & Science Center in the Oakland hills has a new exhibit: Shared Sky: Photos of Our Universe.

What's inside

Chabot says the exhibit has three parts:

  • Astrophotography Prize 2026: 22 of the top-judged images from the global competition are shown as large prints, plus about 100 finalists in digital form. Entry categories include Astro Landscapes, Auroras, Deep Space and Remote Imaging.
  • Space telescopes: a section with the Space Telescope Science Institute on Hubble, Webb and the coming Roman telescope, including how astronomers "see" infrared and other invisible light.
  • Bay Area astronomy: local astrophotographers, astronomy clubs and Chabot Observatory's long history of community stargazing.

At the entrance, an interactive station walks visitors through how astrophotography works and lets them make their own astro-selfie. The Oaklandside says the exhibit also has photos by Bay Area amateur astronomers, a communal art project and hands-on activities.

The exhibit is in Studio 3 (Astronomy Hall), next to the observation deck, and runs through October 2027. According to The Oaklandside, Chabot is open Wednesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $19 to $24, and children under 2 get in free. The center is at 10000 Skyline Blvd. in Oakland.
