Atherton residents won't see a Town Council race on their Nov. 3 ballots. The town's election page says the council passed Resolution 2026-15 on Aug. 18, appointing the four qualified candidates to the open seats and canceling the election.

Who was appointed

  • Rick DeGolia (incumbent): his fifth term, from December 2026 to December 2030.
  • Bill Widmer (incumbent since 2010): a special two-year term ending December 2028. It fills the rest of the term left by Diana Hawkins-Manuelian, who resigned in September 2025.
  • Christine David: a nonprofit executive who chairs the board of Friends of the Atherton Library. She ran unsuccessfully in 2020. Her term ends December 2030.
  • Jerry Leugers: a planning commissioner who chairs the town's Transportation, Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Committee. His candidate statement said he's running to fight state housing mandates and protect the town's finances. His term ends December 2030.

The Almanac reports the meeting lasted just five minutes and the vote was 4-0, with Mayor Stacy Holland absent. Holland decided not to seek reelection after one term.

You'll still get a ballot

Atherton voters still vote on Nov. 3 for state, county and district races and measures.

How to vote

Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3. Polls and vote centers close at 8 p.m., and mailed ballots must be postmarked by Election Day and arrive within seven days. You can check your registration and ballot status at sos.ca.gov/elections. California lets you register and vote the same day at a vote center.
