Cotati, Sonoma County's smallest city, won't have a City Council race on its Nov. 3 ballot. At a 10-minute special meeting on Aug. 18, the council voted unanimously to cancel the city election and appoint the only two candidates, The Press Democrat reported.
Who joins the council
- Kimberlyn Moffet, a planning commissioner and nonprofit executive. She has chaired the Planning Commission and served on the Measure G/S Oversight Committee, according to NorCal Public Media.
- Ryan Long, chair of the Planning Commission.
Both start four-year terms in December. They replace Mayor Sylvia Lemus, who is running for the District 2 seat on the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors, and Council member John Savage, who isn't running again.
Why cancel
City Manager Damin O'Bid said canceling saves an estimated $30,000, The Press Democrat reported. NorCal Public Media put the savings at $20,000 to $30,000. The filing deadline had already been extended from Aug. 7 to Aug. 12 because the incumbents didn't file, and nobody else entered.
What Cotati voters still decide
Cotati voters still get ballots. The Press Democrat says they include a county measure that would permanently extend a one-eighth-cent sales tax for city and county parks, and a record $830 million bond for Santa Rosa Junior College campuses.
How to vote
Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3. Polls and vote centers close at 8 p.m., and mailed ballots must be postmarked by Election Day and arrive within seven days. You can check your registration and ballot status at sos.ca.gov/elections. California lets you register and vote the same day at a vote center.
