Albany Unified's board has five members, and four seats are on the Nov. 3 ballot. Three are full four-year terms and one is a two-year term. Albany uses ranked-choice voting for its local races. Albany 16- and 17-year-olds can vote in school board races too.

The candidates

  • Becky Hopwood (incumbent) is a former nurse and midwife.
  • Melissa Boyd served on the board from 2020 to 2024 and was appointed again in 2025.
  • Josh Mahoney was appointed to the board and has served as board president. He worked on Measure L, the district's $64 million bond.
  • Margaret Allen is a vice president of finance.
  • David McKinney is an education researcher with a PhD from Johns Hopkins.

How it works

With five candidates for four seats, only one will miss out. Your sample ballot shows how the four-year and two-year seats are listed, so check it before you vote. Albany lets you rank candidates in order of preference. See our ranked-choice voting explainer for how the count works.

Albany voters also pick two City Council members and decide several local measures, including Measure Q.

How to vote

Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3. Polls and vote centers close at 8 p.m., and mailed ballots must be postmarked by Election Day and arrive within seven days. You can check your registration and ballot status at sos.ca.gov/elections. California lets you register and vote the same day at a vote center. For more local races and measures, see our 2026 Bay Area election hub.
