AC Transit has settled a new contract with the union for its white-collar and supervisory staff. The agency said its board approved, by majority vote, a collective bargaining agreement covering more than 300 employees represented by AFSCME Local 3916. The members, who include administrative employees, supervisors and managers, had already ratified it.

The terms

AC Transit said the deal includes 3% raises in the current fiscal year, in FY 2027-28 and in FY 2028-29. The Oaklandside reported that the contract runs through December 2028, at an estimated cost of $7.5 million. On-call pay rises from $75 to $200 a week, the first increase in a decade. The agency must also buy new illuminated safety equipment the union had requested for years. Union members will have a bigger say in how AC Transit uses contract workers.

Budget backdrop

AC Transit said the agreement comes as it works on an estimated $200 million deficit projected over the next four years. "Even in a challenging fiscal environment, we are balancing responsible stewardship of public funds with the need to attract and retain the experienced professionals who serve our riders," board president Diane Shaw said. The Oaklandside noted that bus drivers, represented by ATU Local 192, are under a separate contract that runs to mid-2029.
