A 71-year-old man was killed early Thursday after a Tesla hit him on westbound Interstate 80 at the I-780 interchange in Vallejo. The driver told the California Highway Patrol the car was in Full Self-Driving mode.
Why it matters: CHP says at least one more vehicle hit the man and drove off, and it is asking witnesses to come forward.
What CHP says happened
The crash was reported around 2:35 a.m., the CHP's Solano Area office said, according to Bay City News. Responders found the man severely injured, and he was later pronounced dead. His name has not been released.
The 26-year-old San Francisco driver stayed at the scene. CHP said the car's dashcam showed the Tesla going about 70 mph when the man walked onto the freeway from the right shoulder toward the center divider.
"The video showed the Tesla's brakes being applied as the vehicle steered to the left in an effort to avoid the pedestrian. Despite these evasive actions, the right front portion of the Tesla struck the individual," CHP said.
Second vehicle sought
CHP said the man was struck again by at least one more vehicle while lying in the lanes, and no other drivers stopped. That vehicle has not been identified.
Anyone who saw the crash or has information is asked to call the CHP Solano Area office at 707-639-5600.
