Big employers in the Tri-Valley have filed notices covering more than 400 job cuts since July, according to state layoff data reported by the Pleasanton Weekly. That is the highest total at large companies in any community in Alameda or Contra Costa counties over the same stretch.

Who is cutting

The largest single cut came from Chevron, which reduced its San Ramon workforce by 178 positions, including more than 20 legal roles and more than a dozen cybersecurity jobs. Chevron moved its headquarters to Texas in 2024 and said this summer that the positions would shift there.

Pleasanton-based Workday filed a notice on Sept. 29 for 142 permanent layoffs at its Stoneridge Mall Road headquarters. The state's WARN list gives an effective date of Nov. 30. In a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission the same day, Workday said the reorganization would cut about 2.5% of its workforce, mostly in its Product and Technology team, and reduce some leased office space. The company estimated $65 million to $80 million in related charges and said it still plans to hire in key areas.

Oracle is laying off 68 people at its Owens Drive office in Pleasanton, effective Nov. 13, and Kaiser Permanente is cutting 22 jobs at its Hacienda Drive IT office, effective Nov. 20. Safeway announced 50 layoffs across its Pleasanton headquarters and Dublin Canyon Road corporate office, and one Pleasanton position was part of more than 70 cuts at the John Muir Physician Network.

Senior tech roles hit hard

Many of the eliminated jobs were in engineering, management and leadership. Workday's list included more than 40 software development managers and 21 automation engineers, along with several vice presidents, according to the Pleasanton Weekly. Oracle's cuts included engineering directors and senior software roles.

What it means

The totals are not necessarily a net loss for the region, since some positions, like Chevron's, are moving rather than disappearing. California's WARN Act generally requires 60 days' notice before a mass layoff, and workers stay on the payroll during that period. Anyone affected can find the state's full list of notices on the Employment Development Department website.
