St. Helena began a citywide cleaning of about 40 miles of water mains on Monday, Oct. 26. The Public Works Department and contractor Hydrologics are using a "zero-discharge" process that filters debris and returns the water to the system instead of dumping it, the city says.
Why it matters: Residents may see brief disruptions and should take a few simple steps after crews finish on their street.
The schedule
- Week of Oct. 26: Zinfandel Lane to Chaix Lane/Lewelling Lane.
- Week of Nov. 2: Chaix Lane/Lewelling Lane to Grayson Avenue/Mills Lane.
- Week of Nov. 9: Grayson Avenue/Mills Lane to Pope Street/Mitchell Drive, plus Allison Avenue and Valley View Street.
Crews start at the south end of the service area and work north, according to Bay City News.
What to do
- Turn off your water or avoid using it while crews work on your street.
- Afterward, run an outdoor hose or an unfiltered cold-water tap for two to three minutes, until the water is clear.
- Then use indoor appliances like washers and dishwashers.
How you'll know
The city will post maps one to two days before work starts in each area and leave door hangers in affected neighborhoods. Updated maps and a video on the process are on the city's website.
