Drive up Highway 9 from Saratoga and you'll reach Saratoga Gap, where it meets Highway 35. The Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District says Saratoga Gap Preserve is located at that junction in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Midpen lists it at 1,600 acres, while Wikipedia gives 1,540 acres.
The trail
The Saratoga Gap Trail is nearly two miles long and is dedicated as part of the Bay Area Ridge Trail, Midpen says. It runs parallel to Skyline Boulevard, passing under weathered oaks and then dropping into a cool Douglas fir forest. Wikipedia notes the trails are open to equestrians and bicyclists too.
The trail ends across from the Hickory Oaks trailhead at Long Ridge Preserve. It also connects with trails to Sanborn County Park, Castle Rock and Big Basin state parks, Upper Stevens Creek County Park and the Skyline Ridge and Monte Bello preserves.
What to look for
Midpen points to moss-covered trees, lichen-covered boulders and sandstone outcrops. Wikipedia puts the elevation of Saratoga Gap at 2,608 feet.
