Some San Pablo voters got ballots this election that left off their own city's races. On Election Day, county and city officials scrambled to get those voters to the polls.
What went wrong
On Tuesday afternoon, Nov. 3, the city of San Pablo sent an alert saying the Contra Costa County Registrar of Voters had given residents of the Idle Wheels Mobile Home Park, at 13900 San Pablo Ave., ballots that "inadvertently excluded" the two at-large City Council seats and local measures, ABC7 News reported.
Contra Costa County Clerk-Recorder Kristin Connelly told Richmondside the printing error happened at the county elections office in Martinez and that incomplete ballots went to 197 people. Election officials sent corrected ballots to polling places after finding the mistake Tuesday morning, and anyone who voted in San Pablo after 11 a.m. wasn't affected, she said. "It's unfortunate," Connelly said. "We did identify the mistake and are using all our resources to fix that mistake."
About 49 people appear to have voted before the error was caught, or mailed in an incomplete ballot. County officials said they were calling and emailing those voters and urging them to request provisional ballots. One resident of the City Center apartments told Richmondside that a San Pablo police officer came to his door to tell him, and said four other apartment complexes had also received incomplete ballots.
What was missing
San Pablo voters are choosing two of four candidates for City Council, which has two incumbents and two challengers on the ballot. They're also deciding on a sales tax the council placed on the ballot and a citizen-led rent control measure the council opposes. The resident told Richmondside his ballot was also missing the EBMUD race.
Where affected voters could go
The city urged affected Idle Wheels voters to request a provisional ballot in person at Helms Middle School, the San Pablo Library Community Room or the Davis Park Multi-Purpose Room. County spokesperson Dawn Kruger said the elections office was working with the city to make sure those voters could weigh in on the local races.
