Independence High School in San Jose has suspended its 76th Calvary marching band program for the rest of the school year, a decision that came just before a regional competition.
In a letter to families, the principal said the school needs to build sustainable "structures, leadership, and supports" for the program, according to NBC Bay Area.
Booster parent Dennis Morrow told NBC Bay Area he suspects the decision is linked to leadership turnover, including a temporary director and an assistant who stepped down. The school has not confirmed that.
Boosters said they were removed as the band's main funding source last year and have offered to help but have not heard back, Focal News reported.
The school has not said whether the band will return next year.
