The San Jose City Council is set to vote Tuesday, Oct. 27, on a new name for downtown's Plaza de César Chávez, ABC7 reported.

Why it matters: The plaza is downtown San Jose's main civic gathering space, and the city is one of many renaming public places after sexual abuse allegations surfaced against the late labor leader earlier this year.

The choices

  • Plaza de San José: recommended by city staff and the public's favorite in the survey. The park has been informally called that since the allegations came out.
  • Plaza del Pueblo de San José: backed unanimously by the Parks and Recreation Commission at its Oct. 7 meeting, blending two popular options.

The council can also come up with a different name, Next City Digest reported.

How the city got here

The process began in March, with listening sessions over the summer and a ranked-choice survey that ended in August. Staff received 610 suggestions, set aside 178 that didn't meet the guidelines and combined the rest into 88 options.

More than 10,000 people answered the English survey, along with 229 in Spanish and 14 in Filipino. City rules require honorees to have been dead for at least five years, which ruled out ideas like naming it after Steve Wozniak.

Some joke entries, including "Parky McParkFace," didn't qualify. The item is listed as file 26-1117 on the council agenda.
