Two polling places on one block
On Landers Street, between the Mission and the Castro, two homeowners just a few doors apart turned their garages into polling places, The San Francisco Standard reported. At one, the homeowner set up a coffee station for a team of five poll workers. Among them was Justin Roderman, a professional baker who took the day off to work his first election. “Getting involved and helping out just felt like the right thing to do,” he told The Standard.
Down the block, Stuart Lewan, who will soon turn 70, was also working his first election. He told The Standard he wanted to volunteer during what he called the most important election of his lifetime. A steady stream of residents and their pets came through both garages, and some were surprised to find two polling places so close together. A few were sent to the other one.
Voting with a side of Moroccan food
In the Richmond District, El Mansour restaurant on Clement Street, known at night for Moroccan food and belly dancing shows, served as a polling place. Mission Local called it “San Francisco's best-smelling polling station.” “Yeah, not for dinner,” voter Libby Shock joked when a poll worker asked if she was there to vote. Shock said she voted for Supervisor Connie Chan for Congress. Another voter, software engineer Inan Husain, said he backed Props. I and B and also Mayor Daniel Lurie's charter reform measures.
A haircut and a ballot
In the Mission, poll workers set up at Ana's Barber Shop on Mission Street. Kevin Stull, who Mission Local said has worked nearly every election for about 11 years, called it his civic duty. Speaking as a voter, he said Proposition H, the parcel tax for Muni, is especially important to him.
San Francisco polling places are open until 8 p.m.
How to vote
Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3. Polls and vote centers close at 8 p.m., and mailed ballots must be postmarked by Election Day and arrive within seven days. You can check your registration and ballot status at sos.ca.gov/elections. California lets you register and vote the same day at a vote center.
