Safeway will permanently close its bread plant at 905 South 34th St. in Richmond in December 2026, affecting 92 employees, according to a state WARN layoff notice filed Oct. 20.
Why it matters: The plant has made bread since 1965, and the company has not said where Bay Area Safeway stores will get their branded bread after it closes.
The details
Workers: 92.
Date: The San Francisco Focal reported a Dec. 30 closing; the state WARN listing shows an effective date of Dec. 20.
Other jobs: Parent company Albertsons said a limited number of employees would be offered other positions, without saying how many or where.
More Safeway closures
Albertsons withdrew its 2026 forecast after a drop in comparable sales, and CEO Susan Morris told investors this month the company planned "aggressive action" over the next 12 to 18 months, the Focal reported.
Safeway is also closing its San Jose store on Bollinger Road by Nov. 13: read our story.
