Before 2022, the strip between the Presidio's Main Post and Crissy Field was cut off by the Doyle Drive freeway approach to the Golden Gate Bridge. Today the road runs through tunnels under 14 acres of lawns, trails and overlooks known as Presidio Tunnel Tops. It opened on July 17, 2022, and the Presidio Trust calls it "the front door to the Presidio."
How it was built
Caltrans, the San Francisco County Transportation Authority and the Presidio Trust negotiated the land transfer from 2015 to 2018. The park had a $100 million budget paid for with Presidio Trust funds and private contributions, and it was designed by the creators of New York's High Line. In July 2025, the 1.5-acre Outpost Meadow expansion opened.
What to do
- Outpost playground: Two acres of play space for kids 2 to 12. The Trust calls it the biggest and most adventurous play space of its kind in the Bay Area. Its water features are modeled on historic Presidio water channels, so bring a towel or a change of clothes. A Mobi-Mat for wheelchair access over the sand can be reserved at least 24 hours in advance.
- Field Station: A free indoor "curiosity lab" run with the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy, where kids can draw butterflies, touch a crawfish and study early explorers' maps. It's open Wednesday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and weekends from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Food: Presidio Pop Up food trucks and stands set up by the Main Parade Lawn, Presidio Plaza and the Outpost, with seasonal hours. Il Parco serves Italian food with a bridge view.
- Picnics: Picnic Place has picnic tables and charcoal grills you can reserve, and the Outpost Meadow Picnic Area faces the Golden Gate.

There is paid parking near the Presidio Visitor Center and the transit center, and a large lot by Sports Basement on Mason Street.
The park itself is free, needs no tickets and is open every day. The Visitor Center, the Outpost and the Field Station keep set hours. Restrooms, including family restrooms, are at the transit center and near the Outpost. Leashed, well-behaved dogs are allowed in most outdoor areas.
