The team behind Meyhouse, the upscale Turkish restaurant in Sunnyvale and Palo Alto, has a new project: Leyla Bakery. Owner Omer Artun named the bakery after his daughter. It launched pickup and delivery last month out of the group's existing restaurants, and Artun hopes to open a storefront in Santa Clara early next year, the Peninsula Foodist reports.
"We've tried doing Turkish breakfast at our restaurants multiple times … but we wanted to have a dedicated Turkish bakery concept," Artun said, because many of those products "need to be done in a bakery."
What's on the menu
The lineup includes simit, a bagel-shaped ring coated in molasses and sesame; açma, a soft, buttery pull-apart bread in original or olive; poğaça, a crumbly, moon-shaped pastry; börek stuffed with spinach, ground beef or cheese; and su böreği, which Artun compares to lasagna. Two pastane simit cost $6, as does the Turkish pide bread.
How to order now
Until the storefront opens, you can order online and pick up at either of the group's locations: 632 Emerson St., Palo Alto, or 187 S. Murphy Ave., Sunnyvale. Pickup hours are listed as 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 5 to 8:30 p.m. daily.
The Santa Clara shop
The storefront will be at 2079 El Camino Real, the former Copenhagen Crown Bakery. It's about 2,000 square feet, with 700 square feet for customers and a few tables, though Artun expects most orders to be grab-and-go. It will serve coffee, Turkish tea, ayran (a yogurt drink) and lemonades. Meyhouse will keep selling Turkish pastries after the bakery opens.
