Laura Owens, the daughter of longtime Bay Area radio host Ronn Owens, was sentenced Friday to 30 days in an Arizona jail in the fake pregnancy case involving former "Bachelor" star Clayton Echard, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.
The sentence
- Jail and probation: Judge Jeffrey Rueter of Maricopa County Superior Court ordered 30 days in county jail followed by seven years of probation, according to the Chronicle and the Guardian. KSBW reported the probation term as 11 years.
- Deferred time: She also got 12 months of deferred jail time that could be imposed if her probation is revoked, KSBW reported.
- The pleas: Owens, 36, pleaded guilty in August to four felonies, two counts of fraudulent schemes and artifices, one of perjury and one of taking the identity of another. Ten other charges were dismissed under the plea deal, the Chronicle reported.
The case
Owens claimed she was pregnant with twins by Echard, who starred in season 26 of "The Bachelor," and a family court judge later found she had falsified sonograms and medical records, the Guardian reported. Prosecutors also charged her over similar claims involving a second man she dated in Scottsdale.
Prosecutors and both men had asked for a year or more in jail, KSBW reported. The judge said he believed Owens had untreated mental health issues. Echard said afterward the sentence did not reflect the harm done. "I want to take accountability for that," Owens told the court, according to the Chronicle.
Ronn Owens hosted a show on KGO 810 AM for nearly five decades.
