Monday, Oct. 12, is Indigenous Peoples' Day, and it is also the federal Columbus Day holiday. That makes for a patchwork across the Bay Area: post offices and some big school districts are closed, BART runs as usual, Muni is on a weekend schedule, and San Francisco drivers still have to feed the meter. Here is what is open and closed today.
Mail and banks
The U.S. Postal Service says every Post Office is closed Monday, and regular mail delivery and retail service resume Tuesday, Oct. 13. Self-service kiosks in some lobbies and usps.com still work for stamps, shipping labels, Hold Mail and change-of-address requests. The Federal Reserve also lists Oct. 12 among its 2026 holidays. Many banks follow the Fed calendar, so check with your branch before heading over.
Muni and San Francisco parking
Muni is running on a weekend schedule Monday, according to the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency. Monday is also the last day of Fleet Week, and the SFMTA's free Muni rides, cable cars included, for people in uniform or showing a military ID run through today.
Don't count on free parking. The SFMTA's holiday calendar, which lists Oct. 12 as both Indigenous Peoples Day and Italian American Heritage Day, says these rules are enforced Monday:
- Parking meters, including green, yellow and red-capped meters
- White zones
- Nightly street cleaning (midnight to 6 a.m.)
- Safety rules such as no stopping, no parking, red zones and blue zones
These are not enforced: residential permit (RPP) time limits, general time limits, weekday daytime street sweeping (6 a.m. to 2 p.m.), commuter shuttle tow-away zones, and unmetered yellow and green zones. Double parking or blocking a driveway, bike lane, crosswalk or hydrant can still bring a ticket or a tow. Meters around Fisherman's Wharf and along The Embarcadero are enforced every day of the year except Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day, and some garages, including the Pierce Street Garage in the Marina, charge around the clock on holidays.
BART
Indigenous Peoples' Day is not on BART's 2026 holiday schedule, so trains run on the normal weekday timetable. Yellow Line riders in Contra Costa County should expect 10- to 15-minute delays late at night, though. BART is single-tracking between North Concord/Martinez and Pittsburg/Bay Point starting around midnight on its Oct. 12-14 work dates so crews can install new fiber optic cable. BART says the last transfers of the night, including the timed meet at MacArthur and the connection to the Antioch train, will be coordinated so every rider can finish their trip.
Schools
San Francisco Unified says all of its schools and offices are closed Monday. Oakland Unified's 2026-27 calendar also lists Oct. 12 as Indigenous Peoples' Day with no school, a day off it gives in place of Lincoln's Birthday. Not every district takes the day off, so families elsewhere should check their own district's calendar.
Other transit
This guide doesn't cover every agency. Caltrain, AC Transit, SamTrans and VTA riders should check that agency's service alerts or 511.org before leaving.
