U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents came to the Santa Cruz Main Jail on Saturday, Oct. 24, to take an inmate into custody. They left without detaining anyone, Lookout Santa Cruz reports.
No advance notice
Sheriff Chris Clark told Lookout his office received no warning from federal immigration officials. Agents stayed outside the jail into the afternoon and had left by 2:30 p.m. In a statement reported by Santa Cruz Local, the Sheriff's Office said it does not take part in civil immigration enforcement. California law bars local police from helping with it.
Observers on scene
Santa Cruz Local says volunteers with the rapid response group Your Allied Rapid Response were alerted around 8:30 a.m. More than two dozen trained legal observers in yellow vests gathered, and about 100 people came and went over several hours. One agent, who would not give his name, told the outlet, "I'm only violent when I have to be. I'm just trying to do my job." By the time the agents returned after being turned away once, the jail doors were locked.
The bigger picture
Federal data analyzed by Santa Cruz Local show ICE arrested at least seven people in Santa Cruz County between Jan. 1, 2025, and Aug. 5, 2026. One of those arrests was at the main jail in April 2025. ICE notified local law enforcement of visits 38 times in that period. Supervisors have barred immigration agents from private areas of county facilities without a judicial warrant.
The group has asked residents not to share unverified ICE sightings, after recent false alarms at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk and Watsonville Plaza.
