San Francisco firefighters responded to Fort Funston around 1 p.m. Saturday after a dog went over a cliff and its owner followed, NBC Bay Area reported.

What happened

  • Location: Crews found the dog and one adult in a shallower section of the cliffs just north of the hang glider deck.
  • The fall: The dog went down roughly 50 or 60 feet, and the woman became stuck trying to rescue it herself, Hoodline reported.
  • Outcome: While crews were setting up a rope rescue system, the woman made her way down to the beach by a dangerous route. Both were evaluated and found uninjured.

A pattern at the bluffs

A week earlier, on Oct. 17, two adults and two dogs were rescued from the same 200-foot sandstone bluffs, with no injuries reported, Hoodline noted. KQED has reported that SFFD crews were called to the cliffs 165 times over five years, including 97 rescues, and that only three of those rescues were for dogs. Most involved people who went over the edge trying to save a pet, Hoodline said, citing KQED.

The park is posted with signs reading "Stay back from the edge" and "Unstable cliff." Officials advise keeping dogs leashed near the bluffs and calling 911 rather than climbing down after a pet.
