OpenAI has expanded ChatGPT Ads to 26 more countries, bringing ads to a total of 89 countries, CNBC reported. The San Francisco company said more than 100,000 advertisers have now run campaigns on the platform.
Who sees the ads
- Free and Go users only: The new markets include Argentina, Colombia, Peru, Nigeria, South Africa, Serbia, Ukraine, Bangladesh and Pakistan, The Verge reported.
- Kept apart from answers: OpenAI says the ads are separate from ChatGPT's responses, don't influence its answers and are clearly labeled.
The money
The ad business reached a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate in August, up from $100 million in March, CNBC reported. OpenAI started testing ads in the U.S. in February. Rival Anthropic made that decision the focus of its first Super Bowl campaign and pledged to keep Claude ad-free.
"Our goal is to make ads useful to people as they pursue their goals and make decisions — and effective for the businesses that advertise with us," OpenAI said. The company said it will keep building new ad formats, measurement tools and buying options. CNBC reported that OpenAI executives have signaled they're eyeing a 2027 IPO.
