Burleigh H. Murray Ranch is a valley ranch inland from Half Moon Bay. Wikipedia says it became a 1,325-acre park in 1979, and California State Parks says the state bought it in 1983.
A dairy family
Burleigh Murray was born on the ranch on July 19, 1865, according to both sources. State Parks says his father came to California from Vermont in 1852. Wikipedia says he worked as a miner in Auburn before settling on the ranch in 1857 and starting a successful dairy.
The Mills Barn
The ranch's best-known building is the Mills Barn, built in the late 1800s, State Parks says. It was originally 200 feet long and could hold 100 dairy cows. State Parks calls it one of two known bank barns in California. Wikipedia describes it as an English-style bank barn that's maintained but not restored, and says its foundation relies on Italian masonry techniques.
The walk
The trail follows the old ranch road along Mills Creek. After about a mile it passes a 1930s bungalow. There's no drinking water, so bring your own. Dogs are allowed on the service road only. The park is open 8 a.m. to sunset.
