The Athletics hired Taylor Smith as president of baseball operations on Monday, Oct. 19, two months after parting ways with general manager David Forst.
Why it matters: Smith will build the roster for the team's final season in West Sacramento and for its 2028 move to Las Vegas, coming off a 64-98 season.
Who he is
He is 31 and a native of Woodstock, Georgia.
He was a senior vice president and assistant GM with the Red Sox, where he oversaw research and development.
Before that he spent seven seasons in R&D with the Rays.
He holds statistics and math degrees from the University of Georgia.
What they said
Owner John Fisher called Smith "one of the brightest minds in the game today." Smith said the A's Moneyball-era work "opened the door to my own career." Senior advisor Billy Beane also praised the hire.
It's unclear whether a GM will be hired to work under Smith. Dan Feinstein has been interim GM since Forst's Aug. 7 departure.
