Who's on the ballot?
Two candidates qualified for Assembly District 19, according to San Francisco's Department of Elections: incumbent Democrat Catherine Stefani, listed as Assemblymember, and Republican Philip Louis Wing, listed on the Secretary of State's certified list as Retired Financial Advisor.
How did June go?
Only the two of them ran. Stefani won 83.0% (108,403 votes) and Wing 17.0% (22,149), Ballotpedia reports. Under California's top-two system, both advance to November anyway.
What does Wing want to do?
In a questionnaire for GrowSF, the pro-growth political group, Wing listed three priorities in order:
- Make health savings accounts deductible on state taxes and line California up with federal tax rules in other ways.
- Local control over expanding housing supply, "including creation of new communities rather than overloading current ones," and reversing policies he says make housing less affordable.
- In schools, "develop a culture of leadership and cooperation" rather than "permitting students to run amok."
Where does Stefani fit in this year's politics?
Stefani is one of 52 Assembly colleagues backing fellow San Francisco Assemblymember Matt Haney for Scott Wiener's state Senate seat, should it open. We covered that in Haney's endorsement list.
How to vote
Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3. Polls and vote centers close at 8 p.m., and mailed ballots must be postmarked by Election Day and arrive within seven days. You can check your registration and ballot status at sos.ca.gov/elections. California lets you register and vote the same day at a vote center.
