Alameda voters have a full ballot this year, with an open mayor's seat, two council seats and three city measures. Two local races, though, were settled in August, when no one filed to challenge the candidates.

School board two-year term

Board President Ryan LaLonde's term ends this year, and he is the only candidate for the two-year seat on the Alameda Unified Board of Education. The League of Women Voters of Alameda confirms that this contest will not appear on the ballot. The two four-year terms are contested by Joyce Boyd, Carrie Hahnel, Mike McMahon, Sarah Putnam and incumbent Gary Lym; see our guide to that race.

Health Care District

Three seats on the City of Alameda Health Care District board are up, and only the three incumbents filed: Gayle Godfrey Codiga, Dr. Robert Deutsch and David Saÿen. With no challengers, the Alameda Post reports, the race will not be on the ballot.

A seat filled by appointment

Trustee Jennifer Williams resigned in mid-August, and on Aug. 25 the board chose to appoint her replacement instead of holding a special election. It received 13 applications and interviewed three people. On Sept. 22 it voted 4-0 to appoint Erick O. Bell, a CPA and accounting professor who teaches at Las Positas College and UC Berkeley's Haas School of Business. Bell was sworn in on Oct. 13 and will serve through November 2028.

How to vote

Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3. Polls and vote centers close at 8 p.m., and mailed ballots must be postmarked by Election Day and arrive within seven days. You can check your registration and ballot status at sos.ca.gov/elections. California lets you register and vote the same day at a vote center.
