The San Francisco 49ers' unbeaten start ended Sunday in Atlanta, where the Falcons forced four turnovers and won 29-20 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
Why it matters: The 49ers (6-1) had turned the ball over only six times in their first six games, AP noted. Atlanta (3-4) scored 13 points off Sunday's four takeaways and committed none.
How it went
- Christian McCaffrey scored on a fourth-down leap from the 1 on the opening drive, then left with a thigh injury. Kaelon Black's 30-yard run made it 14-3 early in the second quarter.
- Black later lost a fumble at the Atlanta 29, and Jessie Bates III intercepted Brock Purdy at the Atlanta 10 in the third quarter, setting up Penix's 21-yard TD pass to Drake London for a 26-14 lead.
- A long review took away an apparent 23-yard Purdy touchdown to Jordan Watkins. Purdy's 1-yard TD to Kyle Juszczyk cut it to 26-20 with 5:05 left, but Eddy Pineiro missed the extra point.
- Rookie Kendal Daniels intercepted Purdy with 2:34 left and recovered a George Kittle fumble in the final minute.
By the numbers
Purdy went 27 of 40 for 288 yards, one TD and two interceptions. Penix was 25 of 34 for 213 yards and three TDs. The 49ers outgained Atlanta 400-295, according to the NFL game book. Kittle had eight catches for 88 yards; McCaffrey was held to seven carries for 39 yards.
"Too sloppy to win," coach Kyle Shanahan said, per AP. Receivers Mike Evans and Deebo Samuel were inactive.
