All lanes of westbound Interstate 80 in San Francisco between 5th Street and 15th Street will close from 11 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23, until 6 a.m. Monday, Oct. 26, Caltrans says.

Why it matters: It is a full weekend closure of the main route from the Bay Bridge toward Van Ness and southbound U.S. 101, so expect backups downtown and in SoMa.

Why it's closing

Crews are placing a polyester concrete overlay on the Bayshore Freeway viaduct deck, Caltrans said. This closure completes the overlay work. The viaducts are 71 years old, and the rehabilitation project runs about two years. Caltrans says the work depends on the weather.

Exits and ramps

  • The last exit before the closure is 5th Street. Drivers can also exit at Fremont Street.
  • The 4th Street and 7th Street on-ramps from southbound Harrison Street will be closed.

Detours

  • To Van Ness and Octavia: southbound Harrison Street, westbound 9th Street, westbound Hayes Street, southbound Gough Street, then westbound Fell Street to Octavia.
  • To southbound U.S. 101: southbound Harrison Street, eastbound 10th Street, then the on-ramp.
