Uber is rolling out OpenAI's ChatGPT Work agent to more than 30,000 employees worldwide, the companies announced Thursday, Oct. 22. It expands a pilot of 1,000 workers.

Why it matters: It is one of the biggest company-wide deployments of an AI agent for office work, and it pairs two San Francisco tech giants.

What employees get

  • An agent that connects to Google Drive, Gmail, Google Calendar and Slack to research, prepare meeting briefs, build presentations and analyze data, OpenAI said.
  • GPT-6.1 Sol as the default model, plus voice and image generation tools.
  • Uber's engineers will keep using OpenAI's Codex for coding.

What the pilot showed

About 80% of pilot users were non-engineers, Uber VP of engineering Sumanth Sukumar told TechCrunch. They used it to analyze operations data, translate training materials and build dashboards.

Uber did not disclose what it is spending. "We'll look at how employees are using the technology, the kinds of workflows they develop and how it helps them work more effectively," Sukumar said.

"As AI transforms how we work, we want to give everyone the tools to innovate," Uber CTO Praveen Neppalli Naga said in OpenAI's announcement.
