Two sets of police data point the same way: crime reports in San Francisco are lower this year than last.

Violent crime: down 4.7%

An analysis of SFPD incident data by Transparent.city counted 6,530 violent crime reports from Jan. 1 through Oct. 19, 2026. That's down 4.7% from 6,850 over the same dates in 2025.

  • Robbery reports fell 21.1%, from 1,520 to 1,199.
  • Street robbery fell from 332 to 223, and carjacking from 59 to 30.
  • Assault reports barely moved, from 5,588 to 5,562. Aggravated assault was down 7.9%, but simple assault was up 3.5%.
  • Bayview Hunters Point had the biggest drop, down 16.5%. The Mission had the most reports, 1,073, up 2.5%. Nob Hill was up 31.1%.

SFPD's own count through September

SFPD's September CompStat report compares year-to-date numbers through September:

  • Total Part I crimes: 17,878, down 18% from 21,763.
  • Part I violent crimes: 2,800, down 10%.
  • Part I property crimes: 15,078, down 19%.
  • Theft from vehicles: 2,787, down 36%.
  • Burglary and motor vehicle theft: each down 22%.
  • Homicides: 18 so far, compared with 19 at this point last year.

Caveats

Both counts measure incidents reported to police, not every crime. SFPD calls its CompStat figures preliminary and subject to revision. The two counts also use different category definitions, so their numbers don't match exactly.
