San Bruno's Planning Commission will not act Monday on the plan to redevelop the Tanforan mall. The Oct. 26 agenda says the item, already continued from Oct. 20, "will be continued to a Special Planning Commission Meeting on November 5, 2026."
What's proposed
- Alexandria Real Estate Equities wants to build a 44-acre transit village by I-380 with up to 1.8 million square feet of life sciences labs and offices and up to 1,500 homes up to seven stories tall, SFGATE reported. About 268 homes would be affordable.
- Plans include 100,000 to 150,000 square feet of new retail, a possible 170-room hotel, and keeping Target and the movie theater.
- The commission is asked to recommend that the City Council certify the environmental report and override an Airport Land Use Commission finding that the project is inconsistent with airport rules, according to the agenda.
Supporters and concerns
"It kind of took on a death spiral," City Council member Marty Medina told SFGATE about the mall. The Bay Area Council said the project is San Bruno's best bet to meet its mandate to plan for 3,165 new homes by 2031.
The FAA raised concerns about adding housing 0.7 miles from SFO. "The project would introduce a new incompatible residential land use into an area already significantly affected by aircraft arrivals and departures from SFO," wrote FAA Regional Administrator Raquel Girvin.
SFGATE reported the City Council could take up the project Nov. 10. With the commission delay, that date may change. Demolition could begin by the end of 2027, the city's community development director said.
