The Marin Community Foundation is providing a $724,500 grant to support residents of Golden Gate Village in Marin City, Marin County's only public housing development for families, KPIX reported.

Where the money goes

  • Rent relief: About $147,000 will cover unpaid rent for 64 households, averaging roughly $2,300 each.
  • Resident services: Most of the grant funds two full-time resident services staff for two years to help families with job placement, Social Security benefits and other programs.
  • Separate fund: The foundation has also committed $1 million to a Golden Gate Village Resident Empowerment Fund, according to KPIX.

Shashi Jivan, the foundation's director of affordable housing and homelessness, said the goal is to ensure residents "have every right to return to the same building when it's fully renovated." Golden Gate Village has about 300 households.

The renovation

Phase 1 of the revitalization began after financing closed on Aug. 19, covering a $97.6 million renovation of the first 88 homes, according to Burbank Housing and the Marin Housing Authority. No buildings will be demolished; homes are getting new kitchens and bathrooms, heating and ventilation, fire safety and electrical upgrades. Residents who temporarily relocate keep the right to return. Completed in 1961, the complex was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2017.
