One person was killed early Saturday in a crash involving several vehicles on Highway 101 in San Jose, the California Highway Patrol said, and the collision closed every southbound lane for roughly three and a half hours.

What happened

The crash happened around 5:30 a.m. on Oct. 10, north of the Tully Road off-ramp, according to CHP, as reported by NBC Bay Area and Telemundo 48. First reports described a single-vehicle crash, but officers later determined that multiple vehicles were involved.

CHP said one person died. Responders were also told of a possible ejection from a vehicle and of someone trapped inside one, and the agency said many of the vehicles had major damage. CHP had not released the name of the person who died, how many people were hurt, or what caused the crash as of Saturday afternoon.

Traffic impact

All southbound lanes of 101 at the scene were shut while crews investigated and cleared the wreckage, sending early-morning drivers onto surface streets through East San Jose. The lanes reopened at about 9 a.m., according to CHP.

The Tully Road stretch of 101 is one of the busiest segments of freeway in the South Bay, and it has seen serious crashes before. Saturday's collision came exactly one week after another early-morning fatal crash on 101 in San Jose, in which CHP said a 23-year-old man was struck after getting out of his disabled car north of Interstate 880.

If you saw it

The crash is under investigation. Anyone who witnessed it or has dashcam video can contact the CHP's San Jose office, which handles freeway collisions in the area.

Bay Area Brief will update this story when CHP releases more details about the victim and the cause.
