Apple on Monday unveiled a new iPad mini with a larger 8.5-inch OLED display, a thinner and lighter design and its A20 Pro chip, according to the Cupertino company's announcement and reporting by TechCrunch and MacRumors.
Why it matters: Apple calls it the iPad mini's "biggest update ever." It arrives days before Apple's "Pro and Tell" event on Wednesday, TechCrunch reported.
What's new
- Screen: An 8.5-inch OLED display, up from 8.3 inches, with more than twice the peak brightness of the last model, Apple said. A nano-texture option that cuts glare is available.
- Design: The Wi-Fi model is 5.4 mm thick, and the device is rated IP67 for water and dust resistance, a first for the iPad mini, MacRumors reported.
- Camera: A 12-megapixel Center Stage front camera now sits on the landscape edge for video calls.
- Sound: A new "Acoustic Display" plays audio through the screen, so there are no speaker holes.
- AI: Apple says the A20 Pro has Neural Accelerators in each GPU core, and the tablet ships with the next generation of Apple Intelligence and Siri.
Price and timing
The iPad mini starts at $699 for Wi-Fi and $849 for Wi-Fi plus cellular, TechCrunch reported. Preorders open Oct. 28, and it goes on sale Nov. 6.
MacRumors noted that Apple's specs don't mention a faster 120Hz display.
